Radio On

Chris Petit / 1979 / GB-West Germany / 102 mins / Robert Beames, Lisa Kreuzer, Sting Robert B, the alienated D.J. anti-hero, travels from London to Bristol after hearing of his brother's suicide in the West Country. He finds few answers on arrival in the city. A bleak, contemplative film, shot in beautiful black and white by cinematographer Martin Schafer who transforms the Bristol locations. The devastating final moments mark the advent of Thatcherism and the termination of all the Sixties' dreams of freedom and escape. Radio On is driven by a powerful electronic, post-punk soundtrack including Kraftwerk (see Trautonium) and David Bowie' Heroes.
