ABSTRACT:
This is an Environmental Tour of the sea region of the Bristol Channel.
In it I will be travelling by van the coastal region from Marloes and Skokholm
Island all the way around to Hartland point in Devon.
Equipped with a petrol generator, a sound system and a table of old electronic
equipment I will be making impromptu performances sometimes utylising material
recorded with microphone onto tape and processed.
I was thinking about what a 'gig' or 'concert' was constituted by.
Both in terms of social and concrete experience and the obvious 'musical'
experience.
I decided that for me to do something purely for its own sake, not justify it
by any level of sharing or accetable format I would need to abandon completely
the conventionally valorised formalites and start with the absolute conviction
in another source of inspiration, in this case the entire coast of the Bristol
Channel, the sea region known as 'Lundy' in the shipping forecast.
The Tour is due to take place between 10th - 18th September this year.
A mobile phone number (mine) is available to call ech day of the Tour should
anyone wish to come out and participate as the audience.
This number is 07968 360 216
It explores the 'coast' as formal operation on the production of
music, sound, composiitons and video.
As a governor of the totality of organic life and activity in its region
the Bristol Channel becomes the backdrop that allows the foregrounded
project (the 'Tour') to accrue some significance.
Attempting to engage in a greater, much greater panorama
I hope to throw planning and pre-conception to the wind (as far as possible)
and search for a union with as many natural stimuli as can be used
as formative elements.
Not only formative but also emotional, as response to place and atmosphere
will colour any spontaneity taking place.
On a daily routine each site is freely explored borrowing a 'drifting'
perception from psychogeography.
The Sea region of Hafren Mor (welsh) will always be the backdrop but
perhaps not always in an obvious way. It is taken that its influence
is already immediate and material but open to the imposition that
any searching and examination may uncover.
Im mindful of treating the found too much as if the 'environmental'
needed anykind of locating or siting.
It is not the brief of this project to do that.
Rather I see the audible as a 'medium' INwhich to
gather, process, connect-with and transform not in order to deny its
ecologic self-reality but to 'make' it human and expressively possible.
Primary to any image concern is the whole of the 'Landscape' and the
dominating role of it over me and anything I am doing.
Image only serves as a means of re-producing the Tour later in a gallery
or cinema.
Having said that I like to work with multiple image types: super 8mm film,
slide film, 16mm film, photographs taken with phones, etc.
