The Way Of The Cube
Artists are continually questioning the idea of what it is to be an artist, often
pushing their work towards more direct forms of social engagement and ultimately
realising that art is inseperable from daily productive living. At the Cube it has
recently been discovered that the project is the running of the cinema by 'artists'.
And as an 'artists run space' we are dealing with the social/cultural form of cinema
where 'cinema' is our medium/material. This has lead to the advanced awareness that
in the modern age it is only institutional forms which have so far escaped modern art's
interrogation. Thus we propose Artists Run Banks, Artists Run Military, Artists run
Hospitals.
Lines of collaborative potential are clouded and muddied in our view by the rigid
orders imposed by 'jobs' created out of so called roles and responsibilites.
So many flagship multi-million pound enterprises fail because of the waste invested
in salaries, which serve only the teleologic purpose of propping up specific classes
of 'career' or 'cultural-economic sectors'. Jobs holders are there because of their
private lives first, whatever they happen to be doing 'at work' second.
The Microplex environment is a simple inversion of this. Workers are here first because
of the graceful act of immersion in creativity. We see cultural and artistic efficacy
proceding along this route to a far higher degree of social permanence than the
'top down' approach. Largely models following the academies of 1600s onwards, modern
'salary manned' organisations have no real reason to exist.
The Collaboration Programme is financially supported by ticket sales only.
